Proposed PX10 Frame Evolution

This webpage is currently and actively being revised.

Representative 'PX10-type' bicycles showing the evolution of frames, headbadges, and decals.

The PX10 was probably first offered in 1960 or 1961. The model is shown in the Peugeot 1961-62 master catalogue (published in October 1962), but not the Peugeot 1959 French brochure, and listed in the Peugeot Tarif Detail Bicyclettes published in October 1961.  I have not yet seen a 1960 master catalogue or brochure, or any other documentation from the transition period to establish an exact date.

The representative PX10's shown below document the progression of head tube shield, and seat tube and down tube decal combinations. In many cases, one or two of the three are replaced at a time from year to year resulting in overlap of the designs, thereby allowing for correct chronological arrangement of the bicycles. In contrast, the production years are harder to pin down to specific dates. Consequently, in some cases I purposely overlapped the estimated year ranges.

1959 PHX10

For 1959 the head tube shield was a silver lion on a blue upside-down curvilinear triangle (i.e., wedge-shaped) nested in a silver scutum (i.e., rectangular-shaped in profile orientation), the Peugeot name on the down tube decal was in cursive, and the seat tube Peugeot lion decal had lateral rainbow patterns.

Below is a mint 1959 PHX10 from Peter Kohler's collection, serial number 703003. The head tube shield and down tube and seat tube decals as well as the pump pegs closely match the PHX10 in the 1959 France Peugeot brochure. Thanks to Peter for permission to use these photos on the BikeBoomPeugeot website.

1960 PX10?

For 1960 the decals and headbadge were similar to the 1959 design, but the brazed-on pump pegs were replaced with band-on pump pegs.

Below is an all orginal1960 PX10? sold by L.W. Schultz on THECABE. Schultz acquired the bicycle from the second owner who said that it was equipped similar to the Peugeot team bike. You can see many more photos of this bicycle on Shultz's flickr album, and read more about its history on THECABE threads one and two.

Below is a 1960 PX10 frame restored by Glenn Sampson. The head tube shield, headset, and chrome are original. The frame has been repainted and the original decals replaced with exact reproductions.

1961 PX10

For 1961 the seat tube decal was similar to the 1960 design, but the head tube shield was now the red wedge-shaped design retained through 1970. The Peugeot name on the head tube shield and down tube decal were in print letters with the 'P' and 'g' connected by a line.

Below is a 1961 PX10 sold by Thierry Chevalier on EBay France in October 2016. Thanks to Thierry for sharing these photos for use on the BikeBoomPeugeot website. Below right is the photo of a similarly designed PX10 ridden by Ferdinard Bracke to win the Grand Prix des Nations in 1962 showing the head badge shield and seat tube decal.

Below is an all orginal 1961 PX10 sold by julian_cO on Ebay in August 2023 on EBay. Julian purchased the bicycle from the original owner who stored it in a basement for decades. Thanks to Julian for permission to use these photos on the BikeBoomPeugeot website.

1962 PX10

For 1962 the head tube shield and down tube decal were similar to the 1960-1961 design, but the seat tube decal was now modeled after the wedge-shaped head tube shield. Inexplicably, the shield is glued, not riveted to the head tube as in the preceding 1961 and and postceding 1963 model years. Alternatively, if this is a 1963 PX10, then the PX10's currently dated here as 1963 would be 1962 models having the down tube Peugeot decal's 'P' and 'g' letters not connected by a line, but preceded and postceded by model years with letters connected by a line. Either way, there is a discrepancy.

Below is the webmaster's 1962 PX10 which is stamped 959113 on the underside of the bottom bracket. The bicycle was purchased from a Pittsburgh Craiglist seller in December 2009.

Below is a lime green 1962 PX10, serial number 935103, from Peter Kohler's collection. The head tube decal is missing, otherwise in mint condition. Most of the components are original. Thanks to Peter for permission to use these photographs on the BikeBoomPeugeot website.

1963 PX10

For 1963, the head tube shield was similar to the 1962 design, but the PEUGEOT name on the seat tube decal was in block letters, and the down tube Peugeot decal's 'P' and 'g' letters were no longer connected by a line.

Below is a 1963 PX10 which is displayed by fahrradjusti on flickr. The underside of the bottom bracket is stamped with 150214. Thanks to fahrradjusti for sharing these photos for use on the BikeBoomPeugeot website.

Below is a 1963 PX10 which was posted on r/Vintage_bicycles by Alwaysdrinkbeercold. He purchased the bicycle from the original owner who got it in 1963 for his 15th birthday. Some of the components had been updated since then. Thanks to Ezra for sharing these photos for use on the BikeBoomPeugeot website.

Super Deluxe Model

At least during part of the 1962 to 1967 time period, Peugeot produced a Super Deluxe vesion of the PX10 with a different seat tube decal that had Olympic rings. The head tube shield and down tube decal where similar to the standard models made during the same time periods.

Below is a blue 1962-1963 PX10 Super Deluxe model restored by Yellow Jersey, Ltd. Thanks to Andrew Muzi of Y.J. for sharing these photos for use on the BikeBoomPeugeot website.

1964 PX10

1965 PX10

For 1963-1964 the PEUGEOT name on the head tube shield and down tube decal were both in block letters. The seat tube now had the checkerboard pattern decals first used by the Cycles Peugeot racing team in 1963 and available to the public in 1964 according to USA and French literature, and race photos of the Cycles Peugeot team.

Below is a PX10 posted on Bike Forums by gd-s in January 2010. This decal scheme closely matches the PX10 line illustration in the Peugeot 1963-1964 master catalogue, and the PA10 color illustration in the Peugeot 1964 French brochure.

1966 PX10

For 1964-1967 the head tube shield and seat tube decals were the same as the 1963-1964 designs, but the PEUGEOT name on the down tube decal was now in block letters.

Below is secessioplebis' (EBay Germany) 1964-1967 PX10 that was posted for auction on European EBay sites in February 2015. Thanks to secesioplebis for permission to use these photos on the BikeBoomPeugeot website.

Super Deluxe Model

Below is a blue 1964-1967 PX10 Super Deluxe model auctioned on EBay by oldsteelmachine in September 2011, and a white ~1965 (give or take a year based on decals and original components) PX10 Super Deluxe listed on Ebay by tottlojo in January 2018. Thanks to oldsteelmachine and tottlojo for permission to use these photos on the BikeBoomPeugeot website.

1967-1970

For 1967-1970 the PEUGEOT name on the head tube shield and down tube decal were the same as the 1964-1967 design, but the seat tube decal now had the championship color stripes adjacent to and bracketed by the checkerboards.

Below is a 1969 PX10 from Peter Kohler's collection. Thanks to Peter for permission to use these photos on the BikeBoomPeugeot website.

1971 PX10

For 1971 the head tube shield and down tube red Peugeot lion decals were rectangular rather than wedge-shaped, and on the down tube decal PEUGEOT was written in white on a black background bracketed by gold and black parallel lines. Also, the 1971 PX10 frame was identical to the 1973 frame except the Reynolds 531 decal was located on the seat tube in 1971 and down tube in 1973.

Below is a 1971 PX10 that was auctioned on EBay from Lemon Grove, CA by coffeeride in February 2015. The serial number is 1636797. Thanks to coffeeride for sharing these photos for use on the BikeBoomPeugeot website.

1972 PX10

For 1972 the decal scheme was similar to 1971. The major difference between the two years was that in 1972 the head tube and seat tube lugs were of the Nervex plain DuBois rather than fancy Professional cut used in 1971.

Below is the webmaster's 1972 PX10 frame acquired in August, 2008 from a fellow 'peugeotphile' who hailed from Denver, Colorado. The serial number is 1971797.
